Description
This domain includes two artifacts. The first artifact is a reflection essay about the licensure code of professional conduct as detailed by the Ohio Department of Education. In the paper, I discuss how the nine ethics of teaching listed by the state education department intended to ensure that students receive the best education they deserve to help them grow as learners. Additionally, I mention how ethics secure the safety of students from potential bodily and mental harm from their teachers. However, my thesis is about the importance of the three ethics of professional behavior, professional relationships with students, and confidentiality in particular. I define these three ethics in detail using the information provided by the Ohio Department of Education’s website. I explain why these ethics are important to help me grow into the teacher I wish to be. This essay elaborates that I want a trusting and healthy relationship with my students so they can be receptive to what I instruct them, and it also explains how these three ethics help achieve this relationship. The second artifact is a teaching analysis for a practice lesson plan instructed to a pretend classroom consisting of my classmates on October 26 for Teaching Language Arts (EDU 248). I created and instructed the lesson plan with a peer, Grace Deaton, and I completed the teaching analysis as a personal reflection on my teaching abilities. This teaching analysis detailed what worked and what needed to be improved in my lesson and provided modifications to my instruction.
Implications
In this domain, I demonstrate a thoughtful reflection on the Ohio state professional learning conduct standards and a commitment to following these standards. The essay contemplates how ethical standards can apply to teaching practices and how they can improve my instruction. Sections within the paper discuss how the standards can ensure safety and security among students as a method of encouraging instruction by creating an effective learning environment. It explains how an effective learning environment protects students from harassment and bullying so they can focus on their studies. Additionally, the essay demonstrates my commitment to honesty and integrity by acknowledging that I, as an educator, must follow the same rules of conduct as my students. I state in my paper that I knew that it is unprofessional for instructors to engage in harassment and plagiarism, and any academic dishonesty or professional misconduct is unacceptable. Meanwhile, my teaching analysis demonstrates my continual dedication to maintaining professional responsibilities in the classroom by reflecting on my teaching. The reflection shows professional accountability for my instruction and behavior in the classroom.
The reflection essay on the Ohio Standards helped me understand my duties and responsibilities as an educator, and my teaching analysis illustrates how I can incorporate these professional responsibilities in my lessons. It is important that I show that I care for my students and that I respect them as individuals. Students need to know that they are welcome and safe within my company. As an AYA English teacher, I need to recognize that I am the oldest person in the classroom, so I am the one expected to behave more maturely and professionally. I cannot allow myself to neglect my responsibilities because students will likely model their behavior on how I conduct myself. I need to regularly practice my professional responsibilities and adjust my teaching as demonstrated in my teaching analysis. I must show them which behaviors are tolerated and which are unacceptable through my actions.
